My next visit on Glasgow’s coffee scene was Laboratario Espresso located in the heart of the city centre on West Nile Street sitting just behind Buchanan Street. The idea from the owner’s is to expose the feel of Italian espresso culture to Glasgow and its visitors. The shop is a small retail unit at the bottom of the 2 West Regent street office block. Internally the shop offers a double height space fitted out with cement board and wooden slatted scaffold boards reclaimed from the Glasgow School of Art with a wax finish that you can smell upon entry. There is 10/12 covers internally with additional benches outside for the rare sunny days in Glasgow.
Open since 2013 I have been visiting the shop regularly since I started studying at university. It has become a firm favourite due to the high-quality coffee and location. The Lab is fitted with a lamarzocco.com coffee machine which is an industry leader in the market of commercial coffee machines. A standard coffee menu is available within the Lab as well as a variety of milk alternatives.
The coffee beans come from a variety of roasters throughout Europe often featuring a guest bean sitting alongside their standard offerings. My coffee of choice in the Lab is an Oat Milk Flat White, which is served in a glass with on point latte art. Another regular order I have is a double espresso which I like served with a crema. A good selection of cakes is always on offer with a personal favourite being the rich truffle brownie. Filled croissants are usually available at lunchtime for something more substantial and can be served hot or cold.
It's one of the nicest aesthetic shops in the city centre combining high quality coffee and pastries served by knowledgeable and friendly barista’s. Well worth a visit when in the city centre.
